HOW YOU CAN HELP

Please call, write, fax or email the government officials listed below to express your concern about MTA's proposal. (MTA reports directly to the Govenor of New York, but please cc the others, who are influential in policy and budget decisions.) Tell them that our votes depend on their efforts to preserve quality of life and not misuse taxpayer dollars.

Spread the word and ask everyone you know to do the same. It is not necessary to live or work in Murray Hill--anyone who cares about the jeopardy to a historic neighborhood can lend support.

Use one of our sample letters for residents or businesses, or write your own, raising the following important issues:

  • possible vulnerability of a ventilation exhaust system in the event of a terrorist attack on Grand Central Station

  • impact on traffic, including emergency vehicles, if only one northbound lane of Park Avenue remains open

  • expected completion of project (in June, MTA estimated 4-5 years; the current estimate is up to 7 years, but MTA has a bad track record for completing work on time or on budget).

  • environmental impact (neighbors near the East Side Access project sustained respiratory illnesses)

  • seismic damage to historic or landmarked buildings from blasting and excavation

  • estimated nearly $100 million budget (MTA's track record in managing budgets has led to numerous subway fare increases)
